Having your car seized by the police is one of the most stressful situations a driver can face.
And most people assume their existing insurance will sort it.
It won’t.
Getting your vehicle released from a police compound requires a specific type of policy – and without it, you could be waiting a very long time.
What Is Impounded Car Insurance?
Impounded car insurance – also known as compound car insurance – is a specialist policy designed for one purpose.
Getting your car out of the pound.
It is not the same as your standard annual cover.
Most regular policies do not meet the legal requirements set by UK police compounds, even if you already have comprehensive insurance in place.
Why Your Existing Policy Won’t Work
When a vehicle is seized, police require proof of a minimum of 30 days’ continuous insurance before releasing it.
Standard and short-term policies do not qualify.
That means:
-
Your current annual policy may not be accepted at the compound
-
A standard temporary policy will not meet the legal requirement
-
Without the right cover in place, your car stays in the pound
And the costs mount up quickly.
Compounds typically charge a release fee of around £150, plus a daily storage fee on top of that.
Every day you wait is money you do not need to spend.
Common Reasons a Car Gets Seized
There are a number of reasons the police may impound a vehicle:
-
No valid insurance on the vehicle
-
Driving without a licence
-
Unpaid road tax
-
Dangerous or illegal parking
-
The vehicle being linked to a reported crime
Whatever the reason, the process for getting it back is the same.
You need the correct insurance first.
How to Get Your Car Out of the Pound
Once you have a valid impounded car insurance policy in place, you can begin the release process.
Here is what you will need:
-
A valid driving licence
-
Your V5C logbook showing you as the registered keeper
-
Proof of your impound insurance policy
-
Payment for any release and storage fees
You will also need to visit the police station in the area where your vehicle was seized.
You typically have seven working days from receiving the seizure notice to reclaim your car.
After that, the police have the right to auction or scrap the vehicle.
Do not delay.
What Happens After the 30 Days?
Impound insurance covers you for the minimum period required to release the vehicle.
Once that period ends, you will need a separate policy to continue driving legally on UK roads.
If the seizure was connected to a motoring conviction or licence issue, it is worth speaking to a specialist broker about your ongoing options.
