Impounded Car Insurance FAQs

Why do I need specialist Impound Insurance?

If you have a seized car, you need a specialist type of insurance for the police to allow you to drive it out. This is because your standard insurance will not cover an impounded vehicle.

Who can take out a policy?

To take out a policy for an impounded vehicle you need to be the owner and registered keeper of that vehicle.

Licence Types

We can only offer policies for people over the age of 21 with a valid Provisional or Full UK License, and EU and international licences held for less than 12 months.

If the vehicle is in the name of a company, we can source a policy that allows the Director of the company to retrieve the seized car.

I have a provisional license, can I still drive the vehicle out of the impound?

Yes – as long as you have someone with a full UK license sat next to you and they are either over the age of 30 or have been driving for at least 5 years.

Can I have a named driver on an impounded car insurance policy?

No – it is not possible to source an impound insurance policy for anyone other than the owner and registered keeper of the vehicle.

What’s the minimum number of days of insurance?

Many look for a day’s insurance, but we only offer policies for 30 days. This is because a majority of impounds will only accept policies that are a minimum of 30 days or more for seized vehicles.

What level of cover can I have?

All of our impounded car insurance policies are Third Party only.

What documents are needed to get an impounded car released?

Once you have the correct impounded car insurance in place, there is a checklist of documents you need to take to the impound with you to release your vehicle. This includes:

1. Driving license

2. Impounded car insurance documents

3. Proof of ownership

Can I get my vehicle released today?

As long as we have all the correct information, we can usually get a vehicle released the same day. The process takes on average an hour to get a quotation and put the policy documents together once we have received payment.

I can’t drive, how do I get the vehicle released?

We get drivers who are unable to drive the vehicle out for many different reasons. It could be because they don’t have a license, or are currently banned. In these cases we recommend registering the vehicle to somebody you know who is able to drive for the purpose of getting it released. However, this is at the discretion of the impound and you will have to ask their permission to do so first.

How does impounded car insurance work?

Once you are happy with the compound insurance quotation, we will take payment for the policy and confirm all the details are correct. Once we are satisfied the policy is right we will put together the documents. This usually takes 15minutes, then they will be sent straight to your inbox ready to release your vehicle.
